Bug: Unicode character in pdf title trips report generation

Just an FYI/ bug report.

Was trying to generate a validation report in pdfToolbox CLI Linux V17.0.682 and kept getting an error.

2026-09-16 08:28:03 ReportError 1000 (unknown error)

After some experimenting I noticed an unusual character in the pdf metadata. The document title ended with ˇ . After running a fix to retitle the document I was able to generate the report.

Thought this info might save someone some frustration.

Hi Stephen,
And thank you for your post.
I tried to reproduce this issue with an own (modified) file containing the haček/caron, but analysis went smoothly using Linux.
Could you please escalate this issue to our normal support@callassoftware.com channel including your sample file and the exact CLI command you have used for the validation report?
Best regards,
Marc

I was able to reproduce the error with a sample pdf file and a very basic profile. I will submit them to support@callassoftware.com

The command format is basically

--report=MASK,overview,always

The report type doesn’t need to be MASK. It also occurs with SUMMARY type. It appears to be the overview option that triggers the error. If I omit that then the report will generate.

I tested it in the windows desktop version and I was able to generate a report with overview in that version.
